Brighten Your Garden with DIY Rainbow Pool Noodle Flowers
Are you looking for a cheerful, kid-friendly craft that brightens up any room or garden? These rainbow pool noodle flowers are it! Made from soft, colorful foam, they’re so easy to make that my kids were assembling whole bouquets — and they’re sturdy enough to survive little hands.
The best part? They’re super cheap and easy. A couple of pool noodles, wooden dowels for stems, and glue — that’s the whole supply list. And cutting and shaping the petals is a wonderful workout for little fingers, building hand strength and scissor skills.
What You’ll Need
- Rainbow pool noodles in various colors (2–3 pieces)
- Scissors (rounded tip for safety with kids)
- Wooden dowels or sturdy sticks for stems
- Glue — a hot glue gun or craft glue
- Optional: decorative ribbons or craft jewels
- Optional: soft felt for leaves
Step 1: Decide How Many
Decide how many flowers you’d like to create — the joy is in the abundance of colors. Gather two to three pool noodles of different hues.
Step 2: Cut the Petals
Cut your first pool noodle into equal sections, about four inches long. You’ll need about six or seven petal pieces per flower. Shape the top of each piece into a rounded petal shape with a gentle curve.
Step 3: Assemble the Flower
Apply a small amount of glue to the base of each petal and begin layering the petals around a center to create a flower. Arrange them however your heart guides you.
Step 4: Attach the Stem
Choose a wooden dowel to act as the stem. Attach the base of the flower to one end of the dowel with more glue, making sure it feels secure.
Step 5: Add Leaves (Optional)
Cut leaves from the soft felt and glue them to the dowel for a lovely natural aesthetic.
Step 6: Repeat and Dry
Continue until all your flowers come to life. Let each creation dry for a bit so the glue sets, then find a lovely spot to display your blooms — a windowsill or a vase works perfectly.
Tips from My Kitchen Table
- Make them personal: Paint designs on the petals or add washi tape and glitter embellishments.
- Vary the sizes: Larger flowers anchor a display while smaller ones fill in with delightful contrast.
- Use the leftovers: Extra foam can become a wreath or garland using the same technique.
- Make it a group project: This craft is great for gatherings — sharing the experience amplifies the joy.
Good to Know
Ages: perfect for all ages — younger crafters need supervision with scissors. Other materials? Paper, fabric, or recycled materials work too. Outdoors? Add a weight to the base of the dowel or use a small pot filled with stones to keep them upright. Fading: colors hold well indoors; extended direct sunlight needs extra care. Storage: keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight — a cardboard box or fabric bag protects them.
